Gaz described his drumming style as “shabby funk”. I’ve always found Gaz to be one of the best-dressed people I know. He told me a story about when the Mondays were recording in the Bahamas. A crew from “The Word” had travelled to do a piece on the band and found Gaz reading a book and smoking a massive spliff. The producer said “you can keep the spliff but you’ll need to lose the book. You don’t want to look like you’re in f*cking James.”
The Mondays were always stuck in a particular box, style-wise. I wanted Gaz to look like Our Man In Havana…
